Welcome to the site for Mist Covered Mountains. This exciting new Celtic quartet in Western Massachusetts showcases the considerable talents of fiddlers and violists Donna Hébert and Katherine First, guitarist, singer and songwriter Max Cohen and singer Molly Hebert-Wilson.

Incandescent fiddle music from traditional French-Canadian, Irish and Scottish sources mingles with sly original tunes and Gaelic, French and witty contemporary folk songs. Fiddle and vocal harmonies are a feature at their concerts. After their successful debut concert in May 2009 for the American Friends’ Service Committee in Northampton, the group is now booking community concert series and other venues in New England and New York.

Donna Hébert is a 2008 Massachusetts Artists’ Fellow in the Folk Arts for her Franco-American fiddling, cited by Governor Deval Patrick for her “outstanding artistic acheivement” at the 2009 Commonwealth Awards. Says friend and colleague Darol Anger, “Donna gets it all right!” A groovemaster fiddler in Irish, Scots and French-Canadian styles, she has made twelve recordings with six groups since 1976, winning a 1988 INDIE Award for Rude Girls: Rude Awakening. Donna performs and teaches with Max and Groovemama at Old Songs and Philadelphia Folk Festivals every year and directs a summer camp at Old Songs.

Max Cohen, a “guitarist’s guitarist,” is the favorite accompanist for many fiddlers and singers, including Donna, Katherine and folk legend Priscilla Herdman, who performs and records with Max. Max produced Katherine’s “Sweet Spot” CD and co-produced Donna’s new “In Full Bloom” CD as well. His new solo guitar CD is in production for a summer 2009 release.

Katherine First’s brilliant fiddle sound and driving performances ignite her audiences. With a penchant for the slow, gorgeous waltzes and airs, she’s a perfect match for Max and Donna. Playing valley venues and First Night 2008 with Max, Katherine has also released a solo recording which Max produced, called “The Sweet Spot.” That pretty much describes the place where Katherine plays!

Molly Hebert-Wilson, Donna’s daughter, has been on stage since she was nine. Involved in more than 30 musical theater and Shakespeare productions since then, she was featured from 2005-2008 in the Tree of Life Concerts at Old Songs Festival and has been singing with Donna since middle school. A junior at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she divides her time between musical theatre and Irish Studies, which takes her to Dublin’s Trinity College for the summer of 2009.
